A northern tribe taking its name from a son of Jacob (Gen. 30:7–8) and occupying a strip of land west of the Sea of Galilee. Barak from Kedesh in Naphtali was inspired by Deborah to rout the forces of Sisera (Judg. 4:6–10). Later Naphtali was invaded by the Syrians (1 Kgs. 15:16–20) and by the Assyrians who deported part of the population (2 Kgs. 15:29). Jonathan the Maccabean 160–142 BCE defeated the Syrians at Naphtali, but it was only under John Hyrcanus (134–104 BCE) that the area was fully restored as Jewish, and as such it was the scene for much of Jesus' ministry.
